This is a great read. More interesting as a personal history than biography of U2, and I share some of that history. I was in college when I heard "Boy." And heard my sister's LP after she saw them in Mpls. Living in Colorado and missed the Red Rocks show but saw the Clash there, soon after. U2's sound fit the landscape. Some rebel rock like the Clash mixed in with a Messiah quality of Daltry in Tommy. Few bands have been able to harness the power chord, R&B, melody without having insipid lyrics (e.g. Kansas, Styx, Journey, Boston). I confess, I never analyzed "wayward son," but who wants to. When you got poets like Bono. "Have you ever wondered why music hurts, when it's done aloof to sin?"--Pete Townsend, a great rock rebel/preacher who let you see his soul, pimples and all.

I think U2 are still rock rebels for peace, aids awareness, religious tolerance, and social justice. Like you say, you walk along side "the man." They are just doing it as middle aged rockers. Very good points about where they channel their charity and political awareness. That is why we need Rock the Cause on a local level!!! Keep it up Scotty. "Rivers run, but soon run dry/We need new dreams tonight . . . In God's Country."

Keep dreaming and keep Rocking.

Great article. I never felt U2 was anything other than "fake." I felt that they became the darlings of music and were just in it for the fame. I really wish I could find the interview with Bono back in the late '80s where he said they were only "in it for the money."

With that said, they were a driving force in music and awareness during that time. They influenced many people to get into music and use it as a way to promote their cause. I just wasn't drinking the Kool-Aid back then. Oh, and the Edge only learned his 4th chord sometime back in the late '90s ;)
