iPhone apps: 1855 French Wine Classification and more

1855If your search for the perfect iPhone wine app is centered on the academic then you need look no further than the newly released app 1855 French Wine Classification.  Here’s an app that makes no pretensions to mass consumer appeal.  This is the one app that is exclusively designed as a quick reference tool and can be used to answer all your unanswered, nagging growth classification questions.  This is the iPhone app for those among us who have turned pro.

Classification of wine estates and vineyards is a fairly new movement. It was brought on by the growing sophistication of wine drinkers dating back to the 19th century. This wasn’t the first attempt at classifying vineyards as history dates that trend all the way to the 14th century with some of the vineyards of Jurancon. So the official lists from regions such as Bordeaux and Burgundy are relatively recent.

It was actually Napoleon III who requested a classification system for France’s best Bordeaux wines which were to be on display for visitors from around the world for the Exposition Universelle of 1855,  an International Exhibition held on the Champs-Elysées in Paris from May 15 to November 15, 1855.  I’m sure that  Napoleon knew that he was at the early front of a very cool iPhone app.

clinksWe’ve also tried the Clinks app and like it very much.  There had been early reports that its data entry was a tad difficult but we didn’t find that to be the case.   After time spent surfing the 1855 French Wine Classification, it seemed to take us back to some much simpler basics.

It was released in summer of 2009 and what we like most about it is the sharing capabilities via Facebook Connect, and a unique graphical analysis of our and their friends’ tasting palates.  There’s no doubt that wine is social so the integration of  Facebook and Twitter seems pretty much a no-brainer.  Clinks is a simple tasting journal for oenophiles that’s been engineered with a definite eye candy appeal for GUI. It’s easy to keep track of the wines you taste and like and then share those recommendations with your friends.

iPhone apps now total over 90,000 with more coming every week.  The wine apps for iPhone are also arriving quickly and getting better it seems with each iteration.
