Love my Wine
“Wine, madam, is God’s next best gift to man.” – Ambrose Bierce
Walk into any Central Market, Texas outlet and chances are 50-50 you’ll see a woman buying wine. No surprise there. It’s a fact of the wine world here that women love wine as much as men, even more so when it comes to whites and rosé. The world knows it and encourages it, if sometimes kinda crassly, with campaigns like the one last summer where every bottle of Provence rosé came with a tube of pink lip gloss. OMG.
But there’s a real difference between the two sexes when it comes to the delights of Vino: Older men are still the prime consumers and collectors of expensive wines. They subscribe to rate-the-wine journals like Wine Spectator and The Wine Advocate, order high-end vino in restaurants, call themselves connoisseurs, which is a polite word for @##hole.
As far as wine goes, the contrast is plain. A lot of women live for the moment, for what can be consumed now, for what’s good even if it’s less expensive, and that’s the way I think it should be. A lot of men, on the other hand, like to hold on to compare and contrast, seek the elusive perfect bottle and show it off when they find it.
Women wax poetic while drinking wine and even when they write about it. I still love what H. Marisol Ramirez, the Associate Producer of Merlove wrote for Sacre Bleu not long ago when dreaming about our Sauvignon Blanc “Sometimes it’s just in the name, as in the case of Sauvignon Blanc. We are talking about a French white wine grape that if allowed will grow wild like a weed. Its goal in life is to live and not only that but thrive in doing so. When this varietal is expressed at its optimum, it is that often needed tickle in life. It’s expression can also be like a baby’s laugh that can’t help but make you smile. In my opinion, the best ones are the ones that give you freedom from oak, roundness and butter. After all, we are not talking about Chardonnay. Sauvignon Blanc is more about enjoying the intensity of life right now in all its sharp detail. I love them because they are crisp, tangy, refreshing and cleansing on the palate. Their natural high acidity helps to remind me about the ever-so-important zest in life. Their exquisite vibrancy can’t help but dance on my tongue as it tantalizes my taste buds. Sauvignon Blanc makes my mouth water and savor for the next flavor. Drawing the red curtains, this perfect aperitif stimulates my appetite for the rest of the evening“!
It’s really kind of that simple and definitely that beautiful.
